Jeff Green Heart Surgery Scheduled For January, Forward Will Miss Season
Boston Celtics forward Jeff Green requires heart surgery to repair his aorta that will force him to miss the entire 2011-12 season, the team announced on Saturday.

Green signed a one-year, $9 million contract last week, but his physical examination revealed a heart issue that required additional testing. After a week spent meeting with doctors, Green's surgery has been set for Jan. 9.

"While we are saddened that Jeff will not be able to play this season, the most important thing is his health, and we were fortunate to have access to an amazing team of specialists to evaluate Jeff's case," Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge said in a press release. "The entire Celtics family supports Jeff during this difficult time in his career."

Because Green did not pass his physical examination, his contract will be voided, but the Celtics will be unable to use the $9 million to sign any other free agents since they were so far over the salary cap to begin with. With the loss of Green, the Celtics have 13 players on their roster and can spend the veteran's minimum to fill the two open spots.
